In recent times, I have noticed there is an increase in the rate of teenage pregnancies. Do not get me wrong, I am not talking about teenage girls(18-19) that are legally married, my article is about those that are under the same roof with their parents i.e. teens that are not yet independent. Below are some cogent points that might have contributed to this new development;
Poverty: Some parents are poor to the extent of dishing out ten naira (#10) as pocket money to their teenage girls and of course it’s after they might have had their meal. We all know that in this present economy, such amount can do as little as nothing, if such a teenage girl should encounter a sex starved guy that will offer her a thousand naira for her body, she will gladly seal the deal, only a few girls with good moral upbringing will refuse such an offer.
Greed : This is related to the first point, a girl with insatiable wants irrespective of the parent’s financial status will be ready to “eat as much as possible banana” in order to have extra cash to take care of her numerous needs.
Ignorance: Some parents fail properly enlighten their female wards on sex education because they think it is morally wrong to engage a teen in such conversation. Teens that have little or no sex education will end up learning the wrong way.
Peer Influence: Most girls tries as much as possible to avoid the stigma of being tagged an “old school” by their friends who are neck deep into pre-marital sex, thus propelling them to join their league.
